Brad Avakian protected employees' rights in the workplace

Brad's background as an advocate for people who've suffered discrimination in the workplace gives him a valuable perspective on economic issues. Brad sponsored legislation making workers who are locked out of their jobs eligible for unemployment benefits and protecting the right of employees to join a union.

Brad Avakian led the effort to expand the Bottle Bill and championed renewable energy

As one of the Legislature's top environmental champions, Brad Avakian led the effort to expand Oregon's landmark Bottle Bill. Brad also sponsored increased use of renewable energy to combat global warming and reduce our dependence on foreign oil.

Brad Avakian fought to protect our public schools from budget cuts

Brad Avakian's commitment to public education started long before he became a legislator. When budget cuts threatened local music and arts programs, Brad helped create the South West Music School, where over 6,000 students have taken lessons, attended summer camp, and trained with top-notch faculty. In the Legislature, Brad Avakian has always fought to protect our public schools from budget cuts.

  • Brad was named a Working Families Champion by the Oregon AFL-CIO and received a Gold Medal for Leadership in the 2007 Legislative Session.
  • Oregon AFSCME named Brad an AFSCME All Star for being a true champion of working family legislation.

  • Brad was recognized by SEIU Local 503 for his instrumental role in sponsoring and passing legislation to provide childcare workers the right to organize and collectively bargain with the State of Oregon.
  • Stand for Children presented Brad with their Children's Advocate Award for his partnership in putting Oregon back on track toward providing our children with the education and support they deserve.

  • The League of Oregon Cities recognized Brad for his tireless work in protecting Oregon's communities by addressing the needs of Oregon's water supply and working to ensure that city residents have the opportunity to have their votes count in local elections.

  • Brad was named 2007 Consensus Builder of the Year by the Oregon League of Conservation Voters for his work as Chair of the Senate Environment and Natural Resources Committee.
  • Brad was recognized for putting the priorities of Oregon's open spaces over partisan politics and delivering the most successful environmental Legislative Session in decades.
