Strengthening democracy, one school at a time
A strong democracy depends on all of us making our voices heard – and not just on Election Day.
When it comes to elections, Oregon is ahead of the curve thanks to forward-looking policies like vote-by-mail and the new motor voter registration. But we shouldn't be complacent just with our high voter turnouts – the truth is, there’s still a lot more we could do.
We should not just remove barriers to participation, but also strengthen interest in the process so that Oregonians, especially young people, want to be involved in the democratic process.
A good place to start is our schools. Let’s return civics education to Oregon high schools and middle schools so that future voters can learn about our system of governance and unique history.
As Secretary of State, I’ll look for ways to inspire more young people to get active and make a difference. I'll make sure that not only are all voices heard, but also that students understand why civic engagement is so critical for our state.
